Will Working From Home Work For You ?

Choosing to start an at home business is a big decision. In some ways it seems to make the most sense and then in other ways it seems like a life-altering decision that might not be worth it. Depending on the kind of person you are in general can determine if working from home will be the right choice for you. Here are some of the questions you can ask yourself:

1. Do you have space for an office space?

It’s important to have a place where you can conduct your business. Maybe you have an entire room to call your office or maybe just a corner with all the essentials. Whichever one works for you and your situation is fine, but the bottom line is you need a fixed office space to work from.

2. Do you have a support system?

It’s encouraging to have the people you live with support your choice to start an at-home business. It’s quite discouraging to have the people closest to you not support your new venture. Other people that you can gain support from are other people who have started their own home businesses. They can guide you through any questions or problems that you may have because they have been there before.

3. How is your time management?

Working from home is convenient because you don’t have to go anywhere each morning except the short walk to your workspace. On the other hand, you are at home where there is usually an endless list of things that need to be done. And that doesn’t even begin to include the things you have to do for your home business. Working from home means you have to learn to divide your time appropriately. Create work hours for yourself. Those are the hours when you don’t worry about house chores. If you are good at multitasking, you might want to create time slots during your work day where you can throw in loads of laundry and the like. But that’s only if you can do the task and get back to work.

4. Are you willing to ask for help?

As someone who works from home, people may be expecting you to shoulder more of the house stuff, since you’re already there. It makes sense to the people who expect it because they likely don’t realize how much you actually have to do to run a business. Don’t be afraid to show them all you’ve got going on and ask them for the help you’re going to need. Also don’t be afraid to bring someone in to help you when you need it. Maybe you have a big interview or conference call coming up and you need someone to keep the kids entertained for a couple of hours. Never think you have to do it all on your own. We all need help sometimes.

5. Can you say no?

As mentioned above, working from home gives many people the impression that you’re just blessed with free time. You may be expected to shoulder more chores at home, but people might begin expecting favors from you such as taking them places, babysitting their own children often or even talking on the phone more than you have time for. An important word for anyone who works from home to learn is “no.” Of course, you won’t always turn people down when they need a favor. You determine what works for you.
